Letter carrier Greg Andregic loaded his truck for the day in downtown Pottsville, Pennsylvania, last year. Under postal consolidation, many letter carriers will face drastically longer commutes. Photo: Jacqueline Dormer/Republican-Herald via AP.
Workers are battling an overhaul of the U.S. Postal Service that would cost thousands of jobs and slow the mail for half the country.
In the name of efficiency, a letter mailed within Cheyenne, Wyoming, would travel to Denver and back. And if you miss a package, your local post office would no longer have it. It might be 45 minutes away.
In March, Buffalo became the…

Dozens of people in Wisconsin have been sickened and at least five needed emergency medical services after inadvertently eating pizza tainted with Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the principal psychoactive compound in cannabis, officials of Public Health Madison & Dane County reported late Friday.
The contamination, which health officials called “unintentional,” occurred at Famous Yeti’s Pizza in Stoughton between October 22 and October 24. In a news release, the local health department advised customers to throw away any pizza they had from the restaurant during that time period.
“We want to be sure anyone who has this pizza on hand throws it away so they don’t get sick,” Bonnie Armstrong, director of Environmental Health at Public Health Madison & Dane County,…

Kamala Harris and her surrogates keep bragging about Dick Cheney’s endorsement. It’s deeply obscene: Dick Cheney is a depraved war criminal whose image should not be rehabilitated.
Kamala Harris’s rehabilitation of Dick Cheney’s reputation is an obscenity. (Patrick T. Fallon / AFP via Getty Images) During a recent appearance on The Daily Show, Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz touted the broad coalition supporting him and his running mate, Kamala Harris. “Dick Cheney, Bernie Sanders, Taylor Swift . . .”
It’s the kind of reference to former Vice President Cheney that Harris, Walz, and their surrogates have made many times throughout their campaign. Stewart, to his credit, seemed to find it painful….

In 2021, Netflix moved to create a new movie collection for its viewers. “Netflix will launch the Palestinian Stories collection, showcasing films from some of the Arab world’s finest filmmakers,” said an announcement of the new grouping. “[T]he collection is a tribute to the creativity and passion of the Arab film industry as Netflix continues to invest in stories from the Arab world.” Thirty-two films were slated for inclusion, with more additions planned. Now, however, following a purge of at least 24 films from Netflix’s library, the landing page for the collection contains just a single film for streamers in the United States: Lina Al Abed’s 2019 documentary “Ibrahim: A Fate to Define” — and that’s…

The Announcement
Late last month there was an announcement of a “severity 9.9 vulnerability” allowing remote code execution that affects “all GNU/Linux systems (plus others)” [1]. For something to affect all Linux systems that would have to be either a kernel issue or a sshd issue. The announcement included complaints about the lack of response of vendors and “And YES: I LOVE hyping the sh1t out of this stuff because apparently sensationalism is the only language that forces these people to fix”.
He seems to have a different experience to me of reporting bugs, I have had plenty of success getting bugs fixed without hyping them. I just report the bug, wait a while, and it gets fixed….

My “we will not hyperfinancialize the social experience through tokens, crypto trading or NFTs” t-shirt has people asking a lot of questions already answered by my t-shirt. No not that crypto-grifter. These are different crypto-grifters: We’re excited to announce that we’ve raised a $15 million Series A financing led by Blockchain Capital […] This does not change the fact that the Bluesky app and the AT Protocol do not use blockchains or cryptocurrency, and we will not hyperfinancialize the social experience (through tokens, crypto trading, NFTs, etc.). To ensure we and our users benefit fully from this expertise, partner Kinjal Shah will join our board. If you are hitching your wagon to Blew Sky, you are…

SPOKANE, WA—Stressing that the best move would be to just shave the whole thing off, sources confirmed Thursday that area man Stephen Blanchet’s shitty beard had barely any frolicsome woodland creatures living in it. “You can tell Stephen’s proud of his so-called beard, but there are hardly any chickadees popping out to chirp a happy tune or chipmunks scurrying through in a mirthful game of chase,” said coworker Sarah Tillotson, adding that while a cheeky screech owl would occasionally pop out when Blanchet was eating to playfully nab a bite for itself, one jovial bird of prey simply wasn’t enough to make the beard work. “Some days there’s a vole in there, but it’s depressing and…

This summer’s Paris Olympics saw an experiment in AI-assisted algorithmic video surveillance. Now French officials say they want to make it permanent, in what experts call a worrying use of invasive and even racially discriminatory technology.

(Emmanuel Dunand / AFP via Getty Images) This month, when Emmanuel Macron’s newly chosen prime minister, Michel Barnier, laid out his first government agenda to the National Assembly, much attention was naturally focused on the budget and immigration. But a seemingly throwaway line pointed to another aspect of security and policing. “We will generalize…

Perhaps one of the more surprising changes in the 6.12-rc4 development
kernel was the removal
of several entries from the kernel’s MAINTAINERS file. The patch
performing the removal was sent (by Greg Kroah-Hartman) only to the
patches@lists.linux.dev mailing list; the change was included in a char-misc drivers
pull request with no particular mention. The explanation for the removal is simply “
various compliance“. Given that the developers involved all appear to be of
requirements
Russian origin, it is not too hard to imagine what sort of compliance is
involved here. There has, however, been no public posting of the policy
that required the removal of these entries.

On October 19, U.S. District Court Judge Michael Watson held a hearing in Stein v LaRose. At the conclusion, he stated from the bench that he believes the issue belongs in state court, and said Stein should have gone to the State Supreme Court. The issue is whether votes for Stein should be counted. She is on the ballot but the Secretary of State says her votes won’t be counted because someone not officially part of the Stein campaign filed a withdrawal of the vice-presidential nominee.
Police use of automated license-plate reader cameras is being challenged in a lawsuit alleging that the cameras enable warrantless surveillance in violation of the Fourth Amendment. The city of Norfolk, Virginia, was sued yesterday by plaintiffs represented by the Institute for Justice, a nonprofit public-interest law firm.
Norfolk, a city with about 238,000 residents, “has installed a network of cameras that make it functionally impossible for people to drive anywhere without having their movements tracked, photographed, and stored in an AI-assisted database that enables the warrantless surveillance of their every move. This civil rights lawsuit seeks to end this dragnet surveillance program,” said the complaint filed in US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

The Supreme Court’s Carpenter decision created a warrant requirement for obtaining location data from service providers. It was a limited ruling, albeit one that has had far-ranging implications.
Thanks to this ruling, law enforcement agencies have started buying location data from third-party brokers, rather than suffer the apparent indignity of having to ask a judge to approve a warrant. The underlying theme of the ruling — that the Fourth Amendment ain’t what it used to be now that everyone’s online all the time — has seen it applied to cases where location data isn’t the underlying concern. Anything law enforcement might use to engage in tracking of individuals is now under additional scrutiny.
And while this is…
