Earlier today, Jack Dorsey sent an email to Twitter staff, notifying employees that they will be ale to  continue working from home as long as they see fit. The CEO notes that Twitter was an earlier adopter of a work-from-home model, though — like much the rest of the world — that push has been accelerated by COVID-19 stay at home orders. Twitter confirmed the decision in an email to TechCrunch, noting, We were uniquely…

Last week the Internet Archive upped our bandwidth capacity 30%, based on increased usage and increased financial support.  Thank you. This is our outbound bandwidth graph that has several stories to tell… A year ago, usage was 30Gbits/sec. At the beginning of this year, we were at 40Gbits/sec, and we were handling it.  That is 13 Petabytes of downloads per month.  This has served millions of users to materials in the wayback machine, those listening…

When Iceland got its first case of covid-19 on February 28, an entire apparatus sprang into action.  The country had already been testing some people at high risk of catching the virus, thanks to DeCode genetics, a local biotech company. Once the arrival of the disease was confirmed, it began rapidly rolling out public testing on a much wider scale. The government, meanwhile, quickly built a team of contact tracers to interview those with a…

Give your grizzled and cramped hands a break from stuffing boards with surface mount components. This is the job of pick and place machine, and over the years these tools of the trade for Printed Circuit Board Assembly (PCBA) have gotten closer to reality for the home shop; with some models diving below the $10,000 mark. But if you’re not doing it professionally, those are still unobtanium. The cost of this one, on the other…

It was only last August that PJRC released Teensy 4.0. At that time, the 4.0 became the fastest microcontroller development board on the planet, a title it still holds as of this writing — or, well, not exactly. Today the Teensy 4.1 has been released, and using the same 600 MHz ARM Cortex M7 under the hood, is now also the fastest microcontroller board. What the 4.1 brings to the table is more peripherals, memory,…

Montana requires all qualified parties to nominate by primary. According to this story, both candidates in the upcoming Green Party U.S. Senate primary are really acting on behalf of one of the two major parties. Dennis Daneke, one of the two candidates, says if he wins the primary, afterwards he will withdraw, because he supports the Democratic Party and doesn’t want a Green candidate on the general election ballot for U.S. Senate. The other Green…

This took longer than we expected, but they have finally arrived! Available for pick-up or delivery from DNA Pizza! Speaking of delivery, a few weeks ago San Francisco ordered the various delivery services to reduce their fees from their criminally extortionate 30% to a still-extortionate 15%, and I predicted that they’d find some loophole or some other way of keeping those fees high. But, to their credit, they all seem to be complying with the…

use-package is an Emacs package which allows packages to be loaded declaratively. It’s been around for ages and I’ve seen it used in other people’s configurations, but I’ve only recently paid some real attention to it. I wish I’d learned how to use it sooner – it’s really improved my Emacs config. Let’s look at an example: (use-package magit :bind ((“C-x g” . magit-status) (“C-x C-g” . magit-status))) Read more… (3 min remaining to read)

Vacuum is one of the sub-systems in PostgreSQL which gets improved with each release.  I have checked past five releases and each has quite a few improvements for vacuum.  Following the trend, there are a number of improvements in vacuum in the upcoming PostgreSQL release (v13) which are covered in this blog.Improvement-1———————Vacuum will be allowed to process indexes in parallel. This means it can leverage multiple CPUs in order to perform index cleanup. This internally…

Archive.org contributor Windsinger is uploading their entire VHS collection of MTV recordings from the channel’s finest era, from its launch on August 1, 1981 until 1989 (with a few 1991 episodes of 120 Minutes thrown in for good measure). It’s remarkable how the channel has evolved (?) from its pioneering earliest days filled with new music, youth culture, and visual experimentalism to its current form. “I’ve been collecting recordings of full, unedited, WITH commercials &…

The Raspberry Pi Foundation have slipped out a new product, a $50 camera module with a larger sensor that increases the resolution from the 8 megapixels of its predecessor to a Sony IMX477R stacked, back-illuminated 12.3 megapixel sensor, and most interestingly adds a mounting ring for a C mount lens (the kind used with CCTV equipment) in place of the tiny fixed focus lenses of past Pi cameras. In addition there is a standard threaded…

Today I’m withdrawing my lawsuit against the Times, after they corrected their story online. What follows is the thinking behind that decision, and what comes next.Exactly three months ago today, I filed a lawsuit against the New York Times for defamation—I called it “clickbait defamation”—based on a story published in September 2019.The story was based on an interview. The interview was triggered by an essay. The headline of the print edition for the story was accurate,…

Enlarge / “Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!” Monty Python and the Holy Grail’s family-friendly approach to swearing handily avoids the F-word. (credit: YouTube/Funny or Die/Monty Python) Scotland has much to recommend it: impressive architecture, gorgeous Highlands, and a long, distinguished intellectual tradition that has spawned some of the Western world’s greatest thinkers over several centuries. It’s also, apparently, home to a medieval manuscript that contains the earliest known usage…

Hello Goblin-Lovers! [tap tap] Is this thing still on? … Great! Well, we’ve had a few polite questions as to what’s happening in MediaGoblin-land, given our last blog post was a few years back. Let’s talk about that. While development on MediaGoblin has slowed over the last few years, work has continued steadily, with significant improvements such as multi-resolution video (Vijeth Aradhya), video subtitles (Saksham) and a bunch of minor improvements and bug-fixes. Like most community-driven…
